Web Browsers

"Vulnerabilities in IE have become so common that some security researchers are recommending that people adopt alternate browsers. The U.S. Computer Emergency Response Team, the official U.S. body responsible for defending against online threats, also advised security administrators to consider moving to a non-Microsoft browser among six possible responses."
Microsoft haunted by old IE security flaw
—CNET News.com, June 30, 2004

Mozilla rules the roost of open source web browsers, and it surpasses Microsoft's Internet Explorer through its smaller size, faster speed and increased functionality. Mozilla won the Best of 2003 Web Browser award from PC Magazine, but lost that title to Opera in 2004. While Opera isn't open source, it is free and provides excellent competition for Mozilla.

Other open source browsers are:

  • Konquerer - Web Browser, File Manager - and more!
  • Kannel is an open source WAP gateway. It attempts to provide this essential part of the WAP infrastructure freely to everyone so that the market potential for WAP services, both from wireless operators and specialized service providers, will be realized as efficiently as possible.
  • K-Meleon is a fast, customizable, lightweight web browser for the win32 (Windows) platform based on the Gecko layout engine (the rendering engine of Mozilla).
  • Amaya, the W3C's Editor/Browser
  • And for those computers without a graphical user interface, Lynx is a text browser for the World Wide Web.
