Compatibility with Windows/DOS Applications

There are a number of tools that provide compatibility with Windows and DOS applications.
  • Element Computer — Simply put, ION is the world's first OS to run Linux and Windows programs side by side on pre-tested hardware giving businesses a Macintosh-like experience, with Linux TCO and PC compatibility all on the same computer. That means you get the best of the best from Linux, with simple menus, a clean look and feel and crisp performance, along with 100% compatibilty with ALL Windows 95/98/Me executables.
  • Linspire is a full-featured operating system like Microsoft Windows XP or Apple Mac OSX. LindowsOS offers you the power, stability and cost-savings of Linux with the ease of a windows environment.
  • VMWare Workstation 4 — Run multiple operating systems -- Windows, Linux, NetWare -- simultaneously on a single PC.
  • XPde Desktop Environment — It's a desktop environment (XPde) and a window manager (XPwm) for Linux. It makes it easier for Windows XP users to use a Linux box.
  • NeTraverse (Win4Lin) — Bringing Windows to Linux
    • Migrate to Linux without leaving your Windows applications behind.
    • Preserve your existing IT investment.
    • Win4Lin increases stability, performance, and reduces IT costs.
    • All the advantages of Linux and access to a multitude of Windows applications.
  • Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix. Think of Wine as a Windows compatibility layer. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code, but it can optionally use native system DLLs if they are available.
  • CrossOver Office — Run popular office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes, in Linux.
  • CrossOver Plugin — Run Windows web browser plugins such as QuickTime, Windows Media Player, and Shockwave in Linux.
  • CrossOver Office Server Edition — Run popular office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office and Lotus Notes, in Solaris or Linux thin client environment.
  • FreeDOS — a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system.
  • DOS Emulation Under Linux — With just a little work, it's possible to get your Linux system to run DOS applications with very little trouble.
